What is PET?

Difficulty level : B1 / low intermediate

PET is a Cambridge exam. It tests you on having the level B1. Once passing the PET exam you will be able to understand most things while on holidays. Unfortunately, you will not be able to work in English quite yet. The PET exam has three sections:

Reading and writing: 90 mins

Speaking: 10 mins

Listening: 30 mins

There are two types of PET exams.

  1. PET
  2. PET for schools

Both exams have similar content and questions. However, PET for schools is designed for school learners.

Score

A, B, C ( pass) . You need at least 140 points to pass. D , E (fail)

Scale score 140-159

Registration

It is essential to book the exam at least three months in advance to ensure yourself a place.

What is FCE?

Difficulty level : B2/ upper intermediate

FCE is a Cambridge exam. It tests you on having the level B2. With a B2 certificate you can start to work and live independently  in English.Moreover, it proves that you can study abroad in English.  The FCE exam consists of four sections:

Reading and use of English: 75 mins

Writing: 80 mins

Listening: 40 mins

Speaking: 14 mins

Score

A, B, C is a pass in the FCE.You need at least 160 points on the CEFR chart to pass. D and E ( fail ). Some universities require you have to have an A in order to gain entry.

Scale score : 160-179

Registration

Places are scarce so make sure to register for the exam at least three months in advance to ensure yourself a place. You can either take a computer or based exam. The structure of the computer based exams looks differenly to the paper based, so make sure to take a look at a computer based exam before registering . What is CAE?

Difficulty level : C1 / advanced

CAE is a Cambridge exam. It tests you on having the level C1. The CAE proves that you can speak  English with confidence. A large number of educational institutions recognise the CAE certificate as  proof of high level in English. More and more companies are asking employees for the CAE certificate. It is also becoming popular amongst primary school teachers. They are required to have a C1 in order to teach in Switzerland. It is considered to be academic English and not the everyday English you will hear on the street. The CAE consists of four sections:

Reading and use of English: 90 mins

Writing: 90 mins

Listening: 40 mins

Speaking: 15 mins

Score

A,B,C (pass). You need at least 180 points to pass. D, E (fail)

Scale score: 180-199

Registration

It is vital to register for the CAE exam at least three months in advance as places are scarce. You can also decide whether you want to take a computer or paper based exam. What is CPE?

Difficulty level: C2/ super advanced

CPE is a Cambridge exam. It tests you on having the level C2. This is the highest level  on the CEFR level scale. . You will only ever be asked for this certificate  if you want to teach English in a high school or as a foreign language. C2 means you are native and have mastered the English language i. Most people, who take the CPE exam are very interested in English and purely do it for their own interests. CAE seems to be more common than CPE and is asked for more frequently. .  CPE consists of five sections:

Reading:  90 mins

Use of English: 90 mins

Composition: 2 hours

Listening: 40 mins

Speaking: 15 mins

 

Score

A, B,C ( pass). You need at least 200 points to pass. D,E (fail)

What are BEC exams?

BEC exams are Cambridge exams. There are three levels. BEC preliminary is B1 level. BEC vantage is B2. BEC Higher is C1. The difference between BEC and regular Cambridge exams is that BEC is  Business English. It depends on your employer or university requirements.

The equivalent to Cambridge exams

BEC preliminary = PET (B1)

BEC vantage = FCE (B2)

BEC Higher = CAE (C1)

What is IELTS?

Difficulty level : Multi-level

IELTS is an exam recognised by universities in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK. The IELTS is requested for visa purposes for Canada and Australia.. Everyone does the same listening,reading,writing and speaking exam so, therefore, it’s a multi-level exam.  The scores range from 1 to 9. Most universities require at least a 6 / 7. There are two types of IELTS exams : General and Academic.  The Academic exam is more common than the General. Writing: 60 mins

Listening: 30 mins

What do I need to do if I want to study in the USA?

Both IELTS and TOEFL are accepted by US universities. More than 10,000 colleges, agencies and other institutions in over 150 countries accept TOEFL scores. If you want to study in the USA, most universities will require a TOEFL exam. Each institute sets its own requirements. The average minimum requirement for USA universities is 78. If you are more common with British or Australian English, the IELTS is a better exam to take. If you are more familiar with American English then the TOEFL is the better option. The TOEFL exam is made by ETS a US company based in New Jersey. The TOEFL exam is made up of multiple choice questions and is about four hours long.  

What do I need to do if I want to study in ocountries?

You also need a TOEFL or IELTS to study in Holland.

Do course fees include the exam fees?

After taking a course with One English , students are responsible for registering for and paying their course fees, which are excluded from the overall course fee. However, teachers will keep students up to date on when they should register and advise them on the best time to take the exam.

How many people are usually in a course?

Our numbers range from between 3 to 11. It is necessary for there to be at least three people in a course

Do we organise social activities?

We organise social activities on a monthly basis where students can socialise and bring a friend along.

Can you join our courses late?

Yes, if students are fully capable of catching up, it is possible to join. We might offer several private lessons to help students with the workload.
